Spencer Tracy & Katharine Hepburn appeared in 9 movies together, starting with 1942′s Woman of the Year - the above black & white moment is literally their first on screen meeting…how gorgeous she was and how cute and manly he was & ending with the above’s 1967 Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner?
Though married, Tracy had lived apart from his wife for decades. They were both opposed to divorce on religious grounds and Tracy & Hepburn had been a couple of sorts for decades as well.
The above scene appears just minutes before the end of the movie where Spencer’s character comments on his love for Katharine’s character playing his wife.
Tracy was ill during filming and would die only 3 weeks after filming wrapped up.
It’ incredible when you think about it how this part was able to allow Tracy to publicly state his love for Katharine under the guise of it being simply a role. Hepburn of course must have been feeling a million emotions since his declaration not only carried the personal aspect to it, but because they both knew it was in a way, his saying goodbye. The look on both their faces..how they blended their art and their lives in one moment is to me one of the most extraordinary moments in film. And even more amazing that their first and last moments on screen both involved them both basically looking at each other, not to many words….first sizing each other up…then 25 years later, saying good bye…it breaks my heart.
Hepburn won her third and second consecutive Oscar for the part.
She’d win it a 4th time for 1981′s On Golden Pond.
The only actress or actor to have won 4 Leading Role Oscars! (Take that Streep!!)
Oh and Tracy himself won two Leading Role Oscars as well….2 years in a row!
